Meet Mathilde
On a wonderful day in May, we met Mathilde, her mother Chelina and her loving 6-year-old brother, Oliver, at Nature Centre Hindsgavl and Nature Reserve Hindsgavl in Middelfart, Denmark.
Mathilde is 4 years old and has Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy (CP). She was diagnosed with CP when she was 2 months old. Mathilde has been classified using the Gross Motor Function Classification System as level V and therefore has difficulties with eating, communicating, muscle control and coordination. She communicates using sounds and facial expressions, and whenever her brother Oliver approaches her, she lights up in a big smile.
Mathilde is home trained by her mother 37 hours a week. Her mother receives guidance from a physiotherapist twice a month and they collaborate on goal setting to ensure efficient goal-oriented training.
As a family, they enjoy visiting animal parks and zoos. Chelina is experienced in finding the ones that have good accessibility and facilities for children with disabilities to ensure a good experience for both her children. Exciting animals, smells and playgrounds with swings adapted for use with a buggy or wheelchair create the opportunity for a great day trip for the whole family.
During their free time, Mathilde, Oliver and Chelina have embarked on a new adventure: camping in various locations across Denmark. They all appreciate the simple joys that camping brings. Sharing a snug space in their caravan, surrounded by playgrounds and nature, offers a multitude of sensory activities to explore and quality time as a family.
A tailored solution for Mathilde
Together with the anatomic head support, the R82 Chilla can be reclined and tilted in space to help Mathilde control the position of her head. The side supports, torso vest, adjustable hip supports and y-hip belt ensure a good stable base of support and optimal position of her torso. Her legs and feet can be positioned optimally by the outer knee supports, pommel and foot support.
Mathilde is fully nourished by a PEG tube to ensure safe and adequate nutrition. She has her own bag with all her feeding tube supplies. The hook on the back of the R82 Chilla and the shopping basket enable her mother to place the supplies in the buggy when they are out and about.
The premium canopy provides Mathilde with shade and protection from the rain. The window in the canopy enables Chelina to keep an eye on Mathilde when the canopy is in use.
With the great adjustability and wide range of options offered by the R82 Chilla, Mathilde has the best conditions to experience the feeling of wind on her face, the warmth of the sun, the variety of colours and lighting conditions around her as well as her brother’s amusing tricks – all the while being posturally supported for the optimal and most comfortable seating position. The tray provides Mathilde with the option of expanding her base of support, as it allows her arms to help stabilise her upper body in the seat, thereby creating a more stable sitting posture from where she can communicate and interact with the world around her.
Mathilde has previously used the R82 Stingray for outdoor adventures, but has recently received the R82 Kudu to continue exploring the great outdoors. At home, Mathilde also enjoys standing in her standing frame, the R82 Caribou, and taking a bath in her R82 Flamingo seat, with suction cups for safe and stable mounting in the bathtub.
